The objective of the program ensures that pooled funds purchase land designated for conservation purposes in perpetuity and the land is available for public and recreational access for activities such as angling, hunting and hiking.
Other factors help determine eligibility:
- Land must be located in British Columbia.
- Land is primarily for habitat acquisition of fish and wildlife populations.
- Land for conservation is accessible to the public.
- Land is designated as private property (i.e. freehold), rather than Federal or Provincial Crown land, or First Nations Treaty Settlement land.
- Land enhancement projects or other land management projects are not eligible for funding.
- Proponents obtain pre-approval of any necessary land designation changes for conservation purposes prior to applying for funding.
- In the event that the proponent sells, transfers or disposes its business that may affect the land purchase agreement, the proponent must:
- Notify BC Conservation Foundation immediately;
- Disclose all relevant information regarding the acquisition or disposition of the land.
- Provide BC Conservation Foundation with proceeds from the acquisition or disposition of land that is equal to the Foundation’s initial monetary contribution, plus 3% annual compound interest from the date of transaction.
- Successful proponents must sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that confirms the awarded funding amount and project conditions.
- The proponent must send an invoice ten (10) days prior to the stipulated closing date of the property purchase for the approved funding amount.
- BC Conservation Foundation communicates successfully acquired properties via our website, other communication channels and the Annual General Meeting.
- The proponent must publicly recognize funding contributions from BC Conservation Foundation on all publications, media releases, presentations, websites, electronic and social media and signage pertaining to the land purchase.
- The proponent consents to erecting signage that contains a highly visible BC Conservation Foundation logo that is a minimum of 15cm x 15cm in size. A photo of the signage must be sent to the Foundation for authentication purposes within three (3) months after the property transaction is complete.
- Photos of the property, a map and promotional materials must be provided for promotional purposes.

The Land For Wildlife Fund has provided protection to critical wildlife habitat, biodiversity and species at risk. These efforts are complimented by leveraging partnerships with other non-profits, First Nations, companies and government entities.
In 2022, the Foundation awarded $25,000 to Southern Interior Land Trust Society (SILT) that acquired Bourguiba Spring – Lot 16, Osoyoos for conservation. Lot 16 is 16.6 ha (41 acres) of open, moderately to steeply sloped low-elevation (600m) with bunchgrass grassland interspersed with open sagebrush and other shrubs.
The Land For Wildlife Fund has leveraged well over $1,000,000 to help purchase over 27 properties around the province over the past three decades.
