BC Conservation Foundation granted $10,000 in 2011 to Nature Trust of BC to purchase and manage the Slocan Island Property, consisting of 61 hectares. The property is located near Winlow, BC and includes significant riparian habitat with Cottonwood forests, mixed conifer forests and wetlands.
The property is locally significant for elk and moose and a variety of migratory waterfowl as well as songbirds. The diverse riparian habitat provides a rich foraging site for Townsend’s Big-eared bats and Western Screech owls.
The channel between the island and the western bank of the Slocan River includes some of the best rearing habitat for Rainbow Trout and foraging sites for Great Blue Heron.
