BC Conservation Foundation granted $50,000 in 2011 to the Nature Trust of BC to purchase and manage the Silvertip Ranch, consisting of 138 hectares. The property comprises of Douglas-Fir, Western Larch, and Lodgepole Pine forest with open areas of bunchgrass, alfalfa fields and wetlands surrounded by Cottonwoods, Aspen and Birch.
Silvertip Ranch is regionally important migration route and winter range for elk, white-tailed deer, and mule deer. The property is an integral component of the lower Bull River watershed area, which is used by elk and deer to calve and fawn in the spring and supports a variety of songbirds, woodpeckers, sapsuckers, eagles and hawks. Predators, including coyotes, wolves, black bears and cougars have also been observed on the property, which is located east of Cranbrook.
