Beach Grove Elementary Embraces Their Environment!

The staff and students of Beach Grove Elementary celebrated Earth day with incredible effort and commitment to their environment this year. Located on the edge of Boundary Bay, in Delta, BC, the school is actively engaged in connecting students to the natural wonders surrounding them in many ways, including an annual birding journal produced by the staff and students for the past six years.

This year, they invited environmental educators from a variety of organizations to participate in their Embracing Our Environment conference. Each class attended two workshops on topics ranging from ecological footprints to environmental activism, wetland critters and creative recycling. Eco Education BC participated in the conference by delivering a workshop on water conservation. The school also brought in Simon Jackson as their keynote speaker, an eighteen year old bear lover who has been instrumental in raising awareness about the future of the Kermode "Spirit Bear".

Students at Beach Grove Elementary prepared art work, posters, displays and information packages in preparation for this Earth celebration. The school involved their community to a great degree as well, having trees, gifts, prizes and organizational support from nine community businesses and the municipality. Invited guests were from all three levels of government - municipal, provincial and federal. A fantastic event for bringing people together to learn about and celebrate our commitment to the Earth.
